Multi-trainer Back Extension

Updated

A plate-loaded back extension that strengthens the muscles responsible for extending and stabilizing the spine. The exercise involves lowering the torso forward under control and then extending back against the resistance of the weighted lever while keeping the hips supported by the machine.

Muscles Trained

  • Primary: Erector spinae (lower back)
  • Secondary: Glutes and hamstrings
  • Supporting: Deep core and spinal stabilizer muscles

Setup and Exercise Steps

  1. Set the machine for back extensions. Position the seat/back support in the reclined configuration shown for the back-extension exercise.
  2. Rotate the weighted lever arm into the back-extension position. Position the padded roller behind your upper back so that it can provide resistance as you extend your torso.
  3. Lock the lever into the starting position. Use the adjustment pin to select a position appropriate for your torso length and comfortable range of motion. Make sure the pin is fully engaged.
  4. Adjust the padded roller. Position the roller across your upper back, below the neck. It should make comfortable contact with your back without pressing directly against your neck or spine.
  5. Add weight plates. Load the desired 50 mm Olympic weight plates onto the weight horn. Start with a light weight until you are familiar with the machine and movement.
  6. Sit in the starting position. Sit securely on the seat with your hips supported and feet firmly braced on the machine’s foot platform.
  7. Cross your arms over your chest. Keep your arms relaxed and avoid using them to assist the movement.
  8. Lower your torso forward under control. Allow your torso to move forward from the reclined starting position while maintaining control of the resistance. Do not allow the weight to pull you forward suddenly.
  9. Extend back against the resistance. Engage your lower back and glutes to raise your torso back toward the starting position, pushing against the padded roller.
  10. Stop at a comfortable neutral position. Finish the extension without aggressively arching or hyperextending your lower back.
  11. Return slowly and repeat. Lower your torso forward again under control and continue for the desired number of repetitions. If you cannot maintain a smooth, controlled movement, reduce the weight.
